The desire to have one’s child excused from taking a school district test may seem trivial to some, but it is an example of a broken system that needs to be reviewed and changed. It is an example that should open many dialogues including how to accurately assess public school children’s progress, and how to best use time and resources when educating not only the severely disabled but all students. This father’s challenge questions why his child should be subjected to a pointless test that takes time away from useful activities and presents an ignominious experience for his child. His small request for his child’s exclusion from taking a test should have big consequences.
